How Our Jewelry Is Made

About SBevis Designs:

Playing around with craft wire in 2008,  I began making “swirly” pendants for family and friends.  When many of them had friends of theirs also wanting pendants made, people kept saying I needed to start a business.  Felt that the jewelry needed to be made out of sterling silver instead of craft wire if it was being sold.  After finding a source for fine silver wire (.999FS) and taking a class on silver soldering at a local bead shop, SBevis Designs was born.

In the early days my pieces were all made from fine silver (99.9% pure silver).  When my designs became more complex I realized the need to make the switch to .925 sterling silver (92.5% pure silver, combined with 7.5% copper = sterling silver).  Previously the fine silver had worked well for the single wire pieces I’d been making.  Fine silver tarnishes less than sterling which my customers loved (the small bit of copper in sterling silver causes most of the tarnishing), but it is much softer than sterling and would not have enough rigidity to maintain its shape in the larger, more complex pieces that I had wanted to start making.  SBevis Designs began using .925 sterling silver in  2009.

SBevis Designs began selling in several small local shows in 2008, finally settling down to regularly selling primarily at the Last Minute Market and the Screw Factory Artists Open Studio events in Lakewood, Ohio (Cleveland area) in 2009.  SBevis Designs pieces went into a couple of art galleries in 2012 (Asheville, NC & Cleveland Heights, OH).  In 2014 I took an extended sabbatical while recovering from a bad motorcycle accident, then a residential move in 2015.  In 2016 I’m back in full swing.
